Ecoyarns specialises in Organic and Ecofriendly products for crafters. We supply Fibres for spinning, Yarns for knitting, crochet or weaving, Organic Cotton fabrics and Organic Cotton Lace. We wholesale and retail.

Organic Cotton
Naturally coloured cotton flourished 5000 years ago but, since the advent of inexpensive industrial dyes, most of the cotton in the world is now white.

During World War II, some green and brown cotton was grown for a limited time as dyes were not available. But largely, coloured cotton was forgotten, as they were thought to yield too little lint that was too short in staple length. In the early 1990s, some large US clothing companies began to buy chemical free cotton due to the huge impact of cotton-directed herbicides, pesticides and other processing chemicals.

Naturally pigmented cotton and fine textiles have been produced for nearly five millennia in Peru, constituting the oldest recorded tradition of spinning and weaving in human history. Over a decade of ethnographic, botanical and archaeological research by the Native Cotton Project of Peru, trademarked in 1994 as Pakucho, has led to the identification of pre-Columbian farming techniques for sustained cotton harvesting and environmental resource management. As steward of this unique genetic resource, Pakucho has recovered a wide range of naturally colored cotton fibre, including cream, beige, brown, rust, chocolate, mauve, green and other earthy tones. No dyes, chemicals or other synthetic processes have been used to grow, soften, or colour the fibres of these original fabric creations.

Organic Baby Alpaca
Alpaca is lighter, 20% warmer, silkier and has no pilling compared with wool or cashmere. Organic Baby Alpaca is the rarest and most precious luxury fibre. The finest of all Alpaca grades, Organic Baby Alpaca has a fibre diameter of approx 20 microns, and is only produced from the animal's first fleece. This yarn begs to be touched and knitted.

Organic Wool

Why choose Organic Wool?

Many Allergic people with sensitive skins will tell you that they are allergic to wool. What is often case, is that they are allergic to the harsh chemicals that are used to process the wool. Washing, Dyeing and Coating machine washable wools leave the wool overprocessed, harsh and scratchy, totally unlike the original thing. Certified organic sheep do not receive routine chemical treatments such as drenching or dipping for parasites, fly dressings, antibiotics, growth promotants and vaccines; nor do they graze on pastures that have been sprayed with herbicides. Organic sheep are bred for resistance to parasites and are fed outdoors all year round on special herbal ley pastures to build healthy immune systems. Organic sheep must graze only on certified organic farms and be fed certified organic stockfood. Genetically engineered or modified feed is prohibited, and mulesing is not practiced.

SOYSILK

What is SOYSILK fiber?

SOYSILK brand fiber is made from the residue of soybeans from tofu manufacturing. This process is 100 per cent natural and free of any petrochemicals, making it an extremely environmentally friendly product. Soy is a completely renewable resource - coming from the earth and being wholly biodegradable. As early as the 1940s, textile experts dreamed of a fibre made from soy. (In fact, Henry Ford had a suit made of soy as an early prototype.) SOYSILK brand fiber offers superior moisture absorption and ventilation properties along with beautiful draping, softness and warmth.

Bamboo
Bamboo is a cellulose fiber much like cotton. Bamboo is a cellulose fibre. Other cellulose fibres include Cotton and Linen. It grows well and quickly, being able to be harvested yearly. It does not require agrochemicals for growth. The underground shoots ensure that the Bamboo will regrow without large scale heavy machinery need for tilling or turning the soil.

Bamboo is an extremely hardy plant that grows in many different varieties around the world. The Bamboo that is used for the production of these yarns is sourced from farmed plantations and does not affect conservation Bamboo in protected natural habitats.

Corn Yarn
Corn is a renewable resource and is Biodegradable under certain conditions. The corn kernels are milled, dextrose is extracted from starch.

Huge fermenters convert the dextrose into lactic acid, a simple organic chemical that is a by-product of fermentation. The compound is converted to lactide and the lactide molecules are linked into long chains or polymers: polylactic acid, PLA. Our Corn yarn is machine washable and tumble dryable.
