Radial Timber Sales
Radial Timber produces more timber from fewer trees and stocks a unique range of native hardwood cladding, decking, linings and screen boards.

Radial sawing maximises the recovery of sawn timber from smaller diameter trees. Most conventional saw mills recover somewhere between 20 & 40% sawn timber sections from each tree (ie the rest ends up as sawdust, wood chips or low value products such as firewood and scantling). By comparison, radial sawing can recover between 40 and 60% sawn timber and up to 80% for some products, from the same trees. Small sawlogs that conventional mills would generally consider to be fairly marginal are ideally suited for radial sawing.

Radial Timber Sales is a member of the Sustainable Living Foundation and the radial process is supported by many environmental groups, designers, developers and builders.

As a company, we pride ourselves on innovation and our commitment to sustainable forestry practices. Due to a lack of plantation grown sawlogs, we currently source the majority of timber processed from managed regrowth forests (ie supplied by Vic Forest) and have a company policy to not mill any "old growth" logs.

Ultimately, it is our ambition to become Australia's first fully accredited native plantation based sawmilling company, processing a range of durable plantation sawlogs. Through trials, radial sawing has proven that the recovery, quality and therefore profit from small diameter plantation logs can be as good or better than that achievable from native forests.

Radial Timber has made a long-term commitment to plantation forestry and has also begun planting its own trees. We currently have around 70 hectares of trees in the ground and, over the next 20 years, plan to continue planting on a yearly basis. To further boost our potential log resource, we are signing first right of refusal agreements with other private growers of managed sawlog plantations.

While the first of these plantation grown sawlogs will not be available for around 10 to 15 years, we are looking to secure our long term future. In the short term, we will continue to source a mix of durable regrowth native forest and plantation logs when they become available.

In summary, radial sawing:

1) Obtains more timber from fewer trees
2) Reduces the need to mill logs from old growth forests
3) Improves current practices for an industry in need of an image "make-over"
4) Is the ideal method for processing plantation grown timbers
5) Is recognised as a "sustainable" saw milling process
