Fair Trade creates a structure of sustainability within which small producers and co-operatives can improve their environmental practices with support from recognised Fair Trade organisations. Fair Trade maximises the use of sustainably managed and locally sourced material resources and encourages organic production wherever possible by paying a premium for organic products.
Traditional production technologies and handcrafting are utilised, minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Funds and research are allocated to further improve these processes. Positive examples of this are innovations to paper making processes in Nepal reducing fuel wood consumption dramatically, a return to vegetable dyes for producers in the Kutch desert, education of producers in regards to waste materials and water pollution and the use of solar power for cooking and heating. Global Conduct encourages their producers to minimise the use of non biodegradable packaging and we recycle all packaging that comes through our doors.

There are some products which are obviously more "green" than others. We firmly believe that by providing fair, equitable and safe working conditions it is then possible to implement educational and social programs that do improve environmental performance and make environmental choices more accessible to these craft producers in developing countries.
