Productive Gardens was established in 2004 with a vision to help urban communities to find a way of supplementing their diet with fresh herbs, vegetables and fruit that have been grown at home.

Company Profile

Productive Gardens was established in 2004 with a vision to help urban communities to find a way of supplementing their diet with fresh herbs, vegetables and fruit that have been grown at home. Having lived in a remote region of Queensland, David realised the importance of food security and the self sufficiency gained from growing your own. As food is transported further and further, the quality of the fruit and veg is deteriorating, while the impact on our environment is increasing. By producing food in the region where it will be consumed, we can reduce the resources required and benefit from the freshness that can only be experienced when picked straight from the plant.

We have developed a variety of systems which enable clients to successfully grow an abundance of produce in a small space in a manner that is efficient, both in terms of water usage and the time commitment involved. No matter how small the garden may be or how high the balcony is, there are solutions at hand.
Productive Gardens has grown to become a one stop shop for everything required to create an edible garden. Around Brisbane we provide a home delivery service offering timely presentation of your goods to your doorstep. For clients further afield, our online store will swiftly dispatch your requirements. Everything in our range of products is scrutinised for ease of use, effectiveness, value for money and for being gentle on the environment.

The key to healthy plants is to maintain healthy soil. By ensuring a balance of minerals, organic matter, beneficial organisms and organic nutrients it is possible to achieve better growth with less pests & disease.

Productive Gardens is based in Manly, Queensland, and ship throughout Australia.

If you'd like to catch up with us, we can be found visiting local markets and exhibitions - see our News page or sign up for our e-newsletter for further information.

Gardening Services
In the greater Brisbane area, we can provide an advisory service in the area of edible landscaping. We can advise on how best to set up a vegetable garden, aspects, soil nutrition and best positions to plant fruit trees.

Composting Units
Compost releases nutrients from organic matter to feed your plants and improve your soil. Apart from the benefits to your garden, composting disposes of kitchen scraps and garden waste which would otherwise be sent to the tip - contributing to the emission of harmful greenhouse gases.

Productive Gardens offers several products which make home composting easy. Choose from the new large Aerobin 400 for outdoor use or the Bokashi Bucket for under-sink fermentation of all food waste.

Aerobin is the next step in recycling - a home organic waste containment system which makes it easy to clean up your household and garden waste. Easy to use - just open, drop in organic waste and close. After a short time, fertile compost is produced. Aerobin also captures moisture which can also be used as liquid fertiliser.

The Bokashi Bucket recycles all organic waste, turning it into organic soil conditioner and nutrient rich liquid fertiliser. Composting organic waste produces nutrient rich soil conditioner.

The Bokashi Bucket uses a unique fermentation process which emits no offensive odour and doesn't attract rodents or insects.

After 3-4 weeks, the bokashi bucket will be full and will be adequately fermented to allow you to dig the compost through your garden, where it will break down rapidly into humus.
Your garden will love our waste management systems and so will you!

Fertiliser
Organic fertilisers, whether they are derived from animal by-product or plant material are an ideal way to improve nutrient levels in the soil.

Soil organisms convert organic fertilisers into nutrients that the plants can then absorb.
Organic fertilisers are generally slower acting and won't burn plants roots.

Worm Farms
The Tumbleweed Worm Farm consists of two sturdy, nesting boxes with a hinged lid. It is a neat, compact, portable unit.

The worms eat and breed in the top box and this is where their food is placed. This box has a perforated base so that any liquid waste can drain through into the bottom box. Solid waste or 'worm poo' which is often called castings remains in the top box. This makes a good soil conditioner and can be harvested as required.

Extra boxes are NOT required. Worms produce more liquid waste than solid as their diet has a high percentage of water. Consequently the build up of solid castings is slow and it will take well over a year to fill the top box with castings.

The bottom box or 'catcher box' collects all the valuable liquid waste which is a by product of the worms. This can be used as a fertiliser on your garden by diluting it with equal amounts of water. There is a drain hole so that this can be poured off and used as required.

Tools
Choose from our wide range of garden tools and gadgets - all designed to make your life easier!
This section contains some traditional devices and will expand to include new products that we test and we decide will make life easier.

This high quality pair of clippers from Kamaki will handle all your pruning jobs around the garden and for harvesting your produce. Japanese craftmanship and technology ensure you'll be still using these long into the future. Light weight with a comfortable grip.

Plants as Gifts
There are many fruit trees that are suitable for pot culture and there for make ideal gifts. Nothing is more rewarding than to receive a plant and nurture it to fruit bearing. All our trees are delivered in an attractive patio tub mulched with diatomite. T Dr John's Mini Gardens make great gifts and we can fill them with mixed herbs, vegetables, colourful flowers or plants to suit another theme and deliver anywhere in Brisbane, Queensland.

Productive Gardens supply a wide range of products that enable you to create an edible garden in the smallest of spaces.
A. Vogel Bio Snacky Seed Sprouting Kits are an easy way to have fresh organic sprouts on hand for your salads and sandwiches.

Water Saving Devices
AS SEEN ON ABC GARDENING AUSTRALIA The 'Wetpot' Watering System consists of porous ceramic pots buried under the soil beside your plants.
Wetpots slowly seep out water under gravity pressure keeping the soil moist, providing you with beautiful fresh herbs and vegetables or strong healthy shrubs and trees.
Water is delivered below the often hard and dry soil surface direct to your plants roots. This prevents water being lost through evaporation or runoff.

As the plants develop, their roots wrap around the wetpots and only take as much or as little water as they require.

1) Easy to install
2) Very efficient direct watering to plants roots
3) Saves water - using as little as 1/2 litre per emitter per week!
4) Grow lush healthy plants in a drought or where other watering systems are restricted or banned
5) Automated without electricity or gadgets
6) Perfect for pot plants or in the garden
