Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology) provides a unique opportunity to study cool water marine biology in a marine environment that has some of the highest biological diversity in Australia. Marine biologists take an interdisciplinary approach to studying how marine organisms interact with their living and non-living environments and how marine ecosystems work. They also consider the impacts of humans on the marine environment and how marine resources can be managed.
Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management) provides students with a broad-based knowledge of the functioning and management of the complex interactions between the biological, physical, social, economic and political worlds. Environmental managers work with natural, rural and urban systems and their natural and human communities. They monitor environmental health, to guard against the degrading impacts of overuse and waste disposal, planning activities and developing policy to achieve the best outcomes for the environment and for society. Graduates will gain the knowledge and skills to be effective managers of all facets of our natural environment. Students can also undertake an elective course of study in Park Management.
Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology) provides theoretical and practical expertise in a range of discipline areas, such as wildlife ecology, landscape and vegetation management, biodiversity and conservation, animal biology and park management. Content will focus on ‘real-world’ problem-solving and applied solutions to wildlife and conservation issues. Students will graduate from the course with strong theoretical and discipline-specific skills and will be immediately able to make a contribution in a highly dynamic field of employment. The course will offer a unique combination of study options. It will also give students professional experience, through experiential learning options, such as working with active researchers, undertaking compulsory internships with professional employment organisations such as Parks Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment as well as the opportunity to be mentored by environment professionals in resume development and interview techniques. Student can also undertake an elective course of study in Park Management.
Bachelor of Environmental Science (Freshwater Biology and Management) provides student with theoretical and practical expertise in a range of biological, ecological, and environmental processes and issues in the freshwater environment. Graduates will contribute in a professional capacity to the study and management of the freshwater environment in Australia and overseas. The course provides students with knowledge, understanding and skills in the interdisciplinary study of a range of discipline areas, such as freshwater biology and ecology, land-water interactions, impacts of humans on water and waterway management. Students can undertake an elective course of study in aquaculture, accessing cutting-edge facilities at the Warrnambool campus and can gain professional experience through experiential learning options, such as working with active researchers, undertaking compulsory internships with professional employment organisations (such as Catchment Management Authorities) as well as the opportunity to be mentored by professionals in the field in resume development and interview techniques.
The Graduate Certificate of Environmental Management and Master of Environmental Management aim to blend advanced scientific training with studies in management and policy. This is critical for employment in the rapidly expanding environmental sector. Offering a flexible program, units may be taken from both the Faculty of Science and Technology and other faculties, including Arts, and Business and Law. Students will be able to structure a course of study offering the best opportunity to gain highly focused skills in their chosen area of the environment employment field. The course is also designed to meet employer demand for graduates with a thorough understanding of scientific and management issues pertinent to both land and marine-based environmental management planning.

Undergraduate Studies in Environmental Management
It is possible to study the Environment as part of an Undergraduate Degree, either as a major or minor. Alternatively, you can also study the Environment through the General Education Program.
Each year, IES produces the Environmental Options Handbook to assist students in making their choices for studying the environment.
You can also order a free hardcopy version: just email your name and address to ies@unsw.edu.au
Postgraduate Degrees in Environmental Management
The programs offered by IES include the; Master of Environmental Management, Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management and the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management - all of which can be completed in either on-campus or distance mode. They rest on a solid foundation of core and fundamental knowledge courses, which provide both a basis for critical appreciation of frameworks for environmental management and basic ‘environmental literacy’ in key disciplinary areas. The latter is seen as a key attribute in the environmental management field, which necessarily involves collaborative decision-making by specialists from many disciplines. For this to be effective, mutual understanding of others’ disciplinary perspectives is critical. Core courses also provide for appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental management and some experience of group work in addressing environmental management issues with colleagues from a range of different disciplinary backgrounds and experience.
Beyond this foundation, students, with the assistance of the Program Coordinator, are free to design a balanced program to suit their specific needs. This program may draw on courses from across the entire breadth of UNSW’s expertise in this area. As a result, these degrees enable you to tailor your degree to suit your specific needs.
Who are they designed for?
The Master of Environmental Management and the associated Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are designed for people from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and career stages. The aim is to provide flexible and practical programs which will develop, build or enhance your career. You may:
1) be working in the environment field, in either policy/social sciences or the technical/science areas, and wish to upgrade or broaden your skills
2) be looking for a career change into the environment area
3) be a recent graduate wanting to establish a career in environmental management
4) want to better understand environmental management

Program Coordination
The Institute of Environmental Studies (IES) was established in 1992 to enhance UNSW's activities and profile concerning the environment. It coordinates the MEM, GradDip and Grad Cert programs.
IES provides an important focal point, coordination and public profile for UNSW's environmental activities, complementing UNSW’s high quality technical and scientific environmental work by acting as a coordination and liaison unit for cross-disciplinary environmental research, education, training, consulting and networking.
We are particularly interested in combining the expertise of academics from the technical and science disciplines with those from the social sciences and management to include environmental education and policy issues.
Our work over the past few years has included: environmental policy and decision-making; sustainability principles (especially the precautionary principle) - their application and consideration in relation to technical issues; environmental indicators and state of the environment reporting; environmental management systems for organisations; sustainability risk and behaviour. We have specific expertise in interdisciplinary environmental issues - notably sustainable energy, water management urban transport, ecotourism, ecological economics and the implementation of sustainable development in local government.
