Undergraduate Studies in Environmental Management It is possible to study the Environment as part of an Undergraduate Degree, either as a major or minor. Alternatively, you can also study the Environment through the General Education Program. Each year, IES produces the Environmental Options Handbook to assist students in making their choices for studying the environment. You can also order a free hardcopy version: just email your name and address to ies@unsw.edu.au Postgraduate Degrees in Environmental Management The programs offered by IES include the; Master of Environmental Management, Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management and the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management - all of which can be completed in either on-campus or distance mode. They rest on a solid foundation of core and fundamental knowledge courses, which provide both a basis for critical appreciation of frameworks for environmental management and basic ‘environmental literacy’ in key disciplinary areas. The latter is seen as a key attribute in the environmental management field, which necessarily involves collaborative decision-making by specialists from many disciplines. For this to be effective, mutual understanding of others’ disciplinary perspectives is critical. Core courses also provide for appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental management and some experience of group work in addressing environmental management issues with colleagues from a range of different disciplinary backgrounds and experience. Beyond this foundation, students, with the assistance of the Program Coordinator, are free to design a balanced program to suit their specific needs. This program may draw on courses from across the entire breadth of UNSW’s expertise in this area. As a result, these degrees enable you to tailor your degree to suit your specific needs. Who are they designed for? The Master of Environmental Management and the associated Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are designed for people from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and career stages. The aim is to provide flexible and practical programs which will develop, build or enhance your career. Program Coordination The Institute of Environmental Studies (IES) was established in 1992 to enhance UNSW's activities and profile concerning the environment. It coordinates the MEM, GradDip and Grad Cert programs. IES provides an important focal point, coordination and public profile for UNSW's environmental activities, complementing UNSW’s high quality technical and scientific environmental work by acting as a coordination and liaison unit for cross-disciplinary environmental research, education, training, consulting and networking. We are particularly interested in combining the expertise of academics from the technical and science disciplines with those from the social sciences and management to include environmental education and policy issues. Our work over the past few years has included: environmental policy and decision-making; sustainability principles (especially the precautionary principle) - their application and consideration in relation to technical issues; environmental indicators and state of the environment reporting; environmental management systems for organisations; sustainability risk and behaviour. We have specific expertise in interdisciplinary environmental issues - notably sustainable energy, water management urban transport, ecotourism, ecological economics and the implementation of sustainable development in local government.
