Australia and the planet are faced with tremendous environmental challenges over the next several decades, including reducing the impact of climate change; using water, energy and nutrients more efficiently; and feeding a global population that will grow beyond 11 billion by the mid 2060s.

At the University of Melbourne’s School of Land and Environment (MSLE), we are addressing these issues with the largest and most integrated environmental faculty in the southern hemisphere. Bushfires and efficient water catchment and irrigation systems are just some examples of the problems we research and solve. We are an active community of staff and students who are passionate about environmental sustainability and internationally excellent in our research and teaching programs.

We offer a range of specialist undergraduate and graduate programs that will equip you to create sustainable urban and rural environments, tackling critical issues such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity with win-win solutions for business and the environment, and driving social and political change. Our close association with government, business, industry, and the community sector ensures that programs provide crucial training and skills valued by both graduates and employers.

With campuses located in Burnley, Creswick, Dookie and Parkville, specialist resources available to you include commercial enterprise farming operations, ornamental gardens, a winery and vineyard, and a forest with diverse tree species.

MSLE is a dynamic hub for research, with strong government and industry research funding support and participation in numerous Cooperative Research Centres. We host a range of leading environmental research institutes and centres, including the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, the Victorian Centre for Climate Change Adaptation Research, and the Primary Industries Climate Change Centre.
