Fourteen buildings in the City of Sydney’s portfolio will see their energy usage slashed over the next two years as a result of a major lighting upgrade.
Council has agreed to a tender for the first stage of the work aimed at reducing total greenhouse gas emissions from the buildings by some 529 tonnes, or the equivalent of removing 118 cars off the road. The work will be implemented as part of the City’s Building Lighting Efficiency Retrofit Program. Buildings involved include Town Hall House, Alexandria Child Care Centre, King George V Recreation Centre, Waterloo Library, and some depots and community centres. They were selected following energy efficiency audits. Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said improving the efficiency of these buildings, all of them large energy consumers, will not only lower greenhouse gas emissions but significantly reduce costs. “This project is an important part of our strategy to reduce Council's overall energy use by 20 per cent by 2012,” Ms Moore said. “Installation of energy efficiency lighting systems in the 14 properties should be completed by August this year,” Ms Moore said. The City became Australia's first carbon neutral local government in 2008 through renewable energy and offsets. Other ongoing projects to lower the City’s CO2 pollution levels include:
