Bottled Water Leading Sustainable Packaging Revolution PDF Print E-mail
Cool Change Natural Spring Water, a Victorian Spring Water business based in the Yarra Valley have made a move towards a cooler planet and have released Australia’s first spring water in an IngeoTM bottle made from an annually renewable resource - plants.

Bottled water is facing increased pressure this summer to become more environmentally friendly with organizations such as the Bottled Water Alliance pushing for 20% less consumption to reduce our reliance on oil and the related carbon emissions form producing plastic bottles.

By simply changing their packaging to IngeoTM PLA (polylactide), Cool Change Natural Spring Water’s production process was immediately reduced their carbon emissions from packaging by 90%. Traditionally, plastic water bottles are made using PET (polyethylene terephthalate), derived from limited and depleting reserves of crude oil and natural gas. In addition to its differences in raw materials and carbon emissions, IngeoTM PLA bottles also has increased end of life options, not only is it 100% recyclable but also has the capacity to be commercially composted.

In addition to the packaging, Cool Change Natural Spring Water have also become the first bottled spring water in Australia with a production process that is certified carbon neutral (certified by Carbon Reduction Institute) through measurement, reduction and offsetting of any greenhouse gas emissions created during the production process.

‘Consumers will not stop buying bottled beverages, so we’ve put our efforts in providing more sustainable packaging choices. We welcome the Bottled Water Alliance’s 20% reduction target and encourage other businesses to review their practices and to use more sustainable methods. Were not saying bottled water is good for the environment, it just so happens that water is the industry that I can make a start in, if I was a dairy farmer we’d be starting with milk. In the future we’d like to see all beverages, milk bottles, strawberry punnets, biscuit trays, plastic bags, to be made using biopolymers (plastics from plants) such as IngeoTM PLA’ states Cool Change Natural Spring Water Managing Director and Owner – Richard Paterson.
