Barbara Gibbs Well, World Oceans Day preparations are progressing nicely to date. The island is going to have a huge weekend 4th/5th June. With the theme being 'Youth, the next wave for change', many Children's activities are planned for both days. The festival at Alma Bay will have several groups organising kids activities including the dugong and turtle mascots, fancy dress and art comps, and there will be live entertainment including singer and hopefully the local Townsville Capoeira group doing demos and classes of the lively Brazilian martial art/dance, balloon art and face painting. Pleasure Divers are offering free snorkel hire to assist the reef cleanup and NQ Dry Tropics are co-ordinating beach cleanups.
The youth talent quest will be held at Barefoot Art, Food, Wine restaurant following the sand garden comp at Horseshoe Bay.
For the more adult and daring, there is hoped to be yet another nude snorkel record attempt followed by live music at X-BASE backpackers.
X-BASE will be morphing into a kids haven the following day, with stalls, clowns, bubble machine, face painters and food stalls with live music for the adults. Restaurants will be showcasing their seafood dishes using sustainable species.
If you wish to advertise your business at the event, please forward info slips or business cards etc to be included in the family sample bags handed out on the day.

Barbara Gibbs Well,, it is time to start preparing for World Oceans Day 2011. Here on Magnetic island, we are hoping to cleanup the reef after cyclone Yasi's assault in February. As usual, there are a plethora of activities planned, and the Mantra Group are doing their utmost to support the day and entice visitors to our beautiful home for the weekend of June 4th/5th.
As the co-ordinator of the event, I am wondering if any of the green businesses could provide some small fillers for sample bags...stickers, small items of eco-friendly nature and info slips promoting your businesses.
